Story Telling is another way we help veterans deal with PTS by creating art pieces about the memories that haunt them.
One's artwork can be used as a springboard for reawakening memories and telling stories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind. Art therapy can help with many conditions and experiences, including Emotion exploration.
Sometimes one's art can become a masterpiece and others can begin to resemble a Rorschach Test: the most famous psychological projective tests in the world. Psychologists use the Rorschach Test to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of the test taker.
With the same goal in mind as a Rorschach Test, we will sit one on one with a Veteran or sometimes with a group of artists and a Veteran in an attempt to create the perfect image through exploring the unconscious mind with art.
Perfect example of this is what we have title "Too Many 72 Hour Shifts" Like many ER attendees, we have medical personnel in all branches of services, that not only deal with the stress of saving lives, but also with the potential of losing their life as well. We have to remember they are not only healing our people, but as well as the ones who are trying to kill them. Through a couple sessions, we have created this image using a beer bottle, The next step is to cover the with a clear epoxy and crack it to make it look like broken glass and as a metaphor for this nurse struggles and memories. Then to paint over the epoxy with their dreams and nightmares in black and white.
If you want to tell your story through art, please reach out and see how we can help; ArtTherapy@TrueTop1Percent.com
There has never been, nor will there ever be, a charge to any veteran or family member for our services. It is our honor to serve those who have served.
Art therapy (not to be confused with arts therapy, which includes other creative therapies such as drama therapy and music therapy) is a distinct discipline that incorporates creative methods of expression through visual art media. Art therapy, as a creative arts therapy profession, originated in the fields of art and psychotherapy and may vary in definition.
